A market range, not a single magic number.

These all-bidder distributions come from groups meeting the pilot's basic credibility rule: at least 10 observations, 3 projects, and 3 agencies. P25–P75 shows the middle half of observed bids.

Interpret carefully: These are unadjusted historical bid observations, not vendor quotes or forecasts. Project scope, quantities, depth, restoration, traffic control, geography, and market conditions can materially affect price.

Two useful views

The winning price is only part of the bid.

The 2026 Edition keeps all bidders and identifies winning-bid observations, allowing users to compare the competitive field with the awarded-market signal.

Practical use

Questions the dataset is designed to support.

DatasetPress positions these records as historical bid intelligence: a structured reference for comparison, investigation, and estimate review.

01

What have contractors actually bid?

Compare observed unit prices from real Michigan public projects.

02

How broad is the bidder spread?

Use quartiles and complete bidder observations instead of a single award value.

03

What has been winning?

Keep winning-bid summaries distinct from the wider bidder pool.

04

How do regions and years compare?

Use the available date and regional fields to investigate Michigan market differences without forcing thin groups.

05

Where did this benchmark come from?

Trace observations through project and source references retained in the product files.

06

Does a current allowance look unusual?

Use historical ranges as a reasonableness check—not as a replacement for project-specific estimating.

Methodology and trust

Transformation stays visible.

Free public records are valuable, but using them consistently requires source discovery, bidder-column extraction, unit review, conservative normalization, quality checks, and transparent documentation.

Original wording retained

Normalized labels do not replace the underlying bid description.

Sources connected

Product observations retain project and document references for review.

Outliers visible

Unusual prices are flagged for inspection rather than silently erased.

Groups kept narrow

Material, size, method, and unit distinctions are preserved when they matter.

Thin samples labeled

Counts of observations, projects, and agencies travel with each benchmark.

Who it is for

A faster starting point for people who estimate underground utility work.

Designed for underground utility contractors, municipal and civil estimators, consulting engineers, and public works teams that need real historical bid context.

Questions

About the 2026 Edition.

Are these actual contractor bids?

Yes. The dataset is based on public bid-tabulation records and preserves bidder-level observations where practical. It is not a database of vendor quotes or current project bids.

Does it contain only winning bidders?

No. The product preserves all-bidder observations where available and maintains a separate winning-bid view.

What years are covered?

The 2026 Edition includes verified bid dates from January 2023 through July 2026. The 2026 period is partial.

Is this RSMeans?

No. RSMeans is a separate modeled construction-cost product. This project organizes historical observations from Michigan public bid records.

Can I filter by item or size?

Yes. The Excel and normalized CSV files include conservative fields for item, category, material, nominal size, installation method, unit, date, and available regional context.

Are sources included?

Yes. Source IDs, URLs, project context, and original descriptions are retained so observations can be traced where practical.

Is this a subscription?

No. The introductory price is $79 for the dated 2026 Edition, paid once. Future editions are not included or automatically billed.

How do I receive it?

After Stripe verifies payment, DatasetPress provides a protected ZIP download containing the Excel workbook, CSV files, documentation, manifest, and checksums.

How should I use historical prices?

As a comparison and investigation tool alongside current quotes, project scope, quantities, depth, restoration, traffic control, geography, and qualified estimating judgment.

Does Michigan or MDOT endorse this project?

No. DatasetPress is independent and does not claim affiliation, approval, sponsorship, or endorsement by Michigan, MDOT, municipalities, or source providers.
